Book giveaway ~ The Shallows

Yesterday I introduced you to an important book by Nicholas Carr entitled The Shallows:  What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains.    Next week I will begin discussing this book in more detail.  I hope you'll join me.

In celebration of Children's Legacy Library's new blog and to attempt to raise awareness of this important issue, I will be giving away a copy of The Shallows on Monday, October 1!  To enter, you must leave a comment under this post only, telling why you use living books or how you are attempting to reduce your time using electronic media.  We will have the drawing on Monday, October 1 and I will post the winner here.

In the meantime...why not read a book?

  1. I use living books because oral story telling is a lost art. Yet children crave to hear a story about an aunt or an uncle, a mother or a father from their grandmother or other relative. These stories will reunite family unity and be foundational for our children's future.
When you are able to make a connection with a book, the learning part, the education, so desired by society will still happen. PLUS you'll have a child whose heart is tender and appreciative and open for all they are meant to do and be.

  2. Congrats on your new blog, Robin -- looks great! I hate, loathe, despise and abominate (that's a quote from my favorite movie, "Meet Me in St. Louis") reading books electronically. Holding a book, feeling the texture of its cover, running my fingers across its pages, smelling its newly-printed ink or the aroma of the library where it has spent its days, reading the previous owner's name or gift inscriptions on its first pages, even observing notations made by an earlier reader -- all add joy to the reading experience for me. Thank you for your vision and dedication to what is becoming a vital ministry in our time -- proving access to living, breathing, life-changing literature.

  4. I use living books because I love how well my children learn with them! In fact, I've been inspired to start my own library, and am currently being overrun with piles of books. :-D

  5. I am using living books so that "things" will be real to my children...so that what they learn comes alive to them!

I recently quit facebook to use
Electronic media less. However, I still use my smartphone to google and find the latest news when needed. I believe it has a place but is very abused in this society.

  6. Nice, Robin! I like your site!

OK, I use living books in my Charlotte Mason homeschool because they are awesome books, bring me and my kids into the story, and we learn so much more than those dry boring textbooks could ever hope to give us. :) Working on my own library (if hubby ever gives me the OK )...

Ah, electronic media..... We already don't watch much TV. It's the computer that sucks me in. I've tried to cut back on FB. I'm getting there... Cold turkey only worked for a couple weeks. Really need to get rid of the computer, but Word and Excel are so much more convenient than pen and paper. :-/

  7. I am thrilled you have a blog now about your adventures with the library. Please include some pictures to give us a tour. Also remember if you have any more books to sale I am needing some for my library.
    Blessings

  9. Posting for Isabel...

Thanks for the library and for the wonderful time that our family has when we go. We use living books because it engulfs us all in the subject matter that each one of us enjoys best. We always come back with much more than what is needed for school.
